Feasting Feats

Aye, is it Hanukkah yet? The holidays are sweeping over us so quickly. Funny how time compresses as our years expand.

Thanksgiving is traditionally Rachel’s least favorite holiday for its inherent domestic insanity and the abundance of lies we tell our children about innocent pilgrims and their Indian pals. But one benefit of adulthood is the ability to revise family traditions. To kick off the holiday, Mama Jane sent us a thirty-pound box of snacks and treats. And I thought we’d left all the junk food two thousand miles behind us! Let’s just say that it hasn’t lasted long on our shelves.

To celebrate the festivities, Rachel’s brother and his friend journeyed to Ashland from their college in Idaho. Our first house guests! We were glad for an opportunity to show off the best of Ashland, despite the blanket of fog that cloaked the city and cloyed at our very windows day after gray day. They toured the area, shopped downtown, did “homework” at the college library, and generally lounged on our couch looking at Facebook on their laptops.

Still, we managed to drag them out of the house a few times for more interesting pursuits. On Thanksgiving Day Rachel expelled the boys to Grizzly Peak while she prepared a feast. A full-scale turkey seemed too daunting, so we each had a Cornish game hen cooked with rosemary and garlic, mashed potatoes, butternut squash with maple syrup, and a stellar peanut butter pie for dessert. If you like peanut butter pie, email me for the recipe. It’s killer, and easy, and includes an entire package of nutter butters.

Ashland had a holiday parade the day after Thanksgiving, but we wandered downtown shortly after to witness the spectacle of holiday lights adorning the buildings. It’s finally cold enough to feel like winter, and we’re looking forward to celebrating Christmas with our families this year.

There are more photos from the past week in the Holla-Days album (see link at right), including a view from the top of Grizzly Peak showing the lake of fog that has cloaked the entire valley for weeks. Next week we’ll post some pictures of Rachel’s preschoolers, so stay tuned for cuteness.
